Decor Ideas For A Warm &Amp; Welcoming Foyer
By Alyssa Davis
Your foyer is your first chance to make a good impression, and when you think about it, you really only get one chance to make that impression a good one. The goal in decorating a foyer is to make it warm and welcoming and to provide a hint of the style to come in the rest of the home. Fortunately, you can accomplish these goals without having to spend a lot of money. A few stylish touches can make all the difference in any foyer, big or small.
hine a Light on your Style
Lighting is essential in a foyer not only for ambiance, but for good visibility and safety. The lighting should be soft and welcoming and not so bright that it is glaring. Your foyer may already have an overhead light; consider changing out the existing fixture with a small chandelier or different style of fixture to add a little more flair to the space.
If you don’t have an overhead light in the foyer, a table lamp or wall sconce can bathe your foyer in an attractive light. Designs range from nautical or rustic style lanterns, elegant tall lamps with crystal rimmed shades, and lamps made from glass, crystal, brass or nickel to fit any style of decor.
Add a Table to the Foyer
A foyer table adds a great amount of style and versatility. Choose a table that is scaled to the size of your foyer; one with a drawer provides a convenient spot to drop your keys or cell phone and other small items. It also provides a place for a lamp, a vase of flowers or other decorative accessories and is a handsome way to ground wall art or a wall mirror hung above it.
Other Accessories that Make a Foyer Functional & Welcoming
A chair or bench is a practical and stylish addition for a foyer where space allows. A place to sit is handy for removing or pulling on shoes or slippers and a bench with a hinged lid offers hideaway storage for gloves, hats, scarves and other small items. A bench or chair can also offer an opportunity to add color, pattern and style to the foyer in your selection of toss pillows.
Even the smallest of foyers can accommodate a beautiful wooden or ceramic stool that can provide a place to sit or hold a plant. A pedestal stand is another option that takes up little floor space but let’s you elevate a flower arrangement, statue or basket of houseplants. A classic umbrella stand adds style and storage; choose from styles and materials from modern to traditional and ceramic to brass.
If you do not have a closet in close proximity to the foyer, decorative wall hooks can help keep the area neat and organized. Or add a vintage style hall tree that can includes coat hooks, mirror and a hinged seat all in one unit. A freestanding coat tree is another classic choice that takes up little floor space.
